The difficult choice of pool filter material
What is best to use in a pool filter? Which product guarantees the best results?
Danny, your pool expert, answers.
Many friends/customers ask me what the best filter material is to use in their filtration system.
The answer is not straightforward but should, or rather, ought to be subjective, taking into account several points.
Quartz Sand
The filter material par excellence is quartz sand (siliceous) with a particle size of 0.4/0.8mm.
This type of sand is certainly the most economical and high-performing product on the market.
However, with each backwash, this type of sand tends to agglomerate iron or scale, thereby reducing a significant amount of filtering surface over time and necessitating its replacement every 4 years or so.
Glass Sand
To overcome this nuisance, for the past 6 years, I have been recommending and installing glass sand with a particle size of 0.4/0.8mm in my systems.
With this type of material, we have the same properties as quartz sand, with the added huge advantage of a larger filtering surface.
In fact, with glass sand, after each backwash, the filtering surface becomes 100% active again because iron and scale cannot agglomerate on the glass, thus leaving the sand intact and pure.
Therefore, for large systems and many cubic meters to treat, glass sand is undoubtedly the best filtering system, but it costs 20% more than quartz sand. This is the only drawback of this type of solution.
Filter Balls
But today there's a big new product on the market that, after testing it in several systems, I feel I can recommend. I'm talking about Filter BALLS.
These are balls of about 10cm in diameter made of composite felt capable of capturing dirt down to a few microns, and therefore also iron/dust/scale.
We can forget about the much-hated 25kg bags! That's right, because with Filter BALLS, 700g of balls correspond to 25kg of sand.
But be careful: it is not a product for all types of systems.
For above-ground or in-ground pools up to 50 cubic meters, it is definitely a very valid alternative.
The maintenance of the balls involves an annual machine wash, guaranteeing an average lifespan of 5 years. For small systems, with a capacity of 1 to 4 bags of sand, I would say it is truly an irreplaceable solution.
