Why there is sand in the pool and how to remove it

Let's look at the possible causes and how to deal with this annoying inconvenience.

Why does the sand filter throw sand into the pool?
Danny, your pool expert, answers.

No "rinse" was done after backwash

The rinse serves to discharge the first water that passes through the filter immediately after a backwash, so if it is not carried out, we risk throwing water containing sand from the filtration system into the pool. To remedy and prevent this problem, it is essential never to forget to rinse after backwashing.

Selector valve in the wrong position

The selector valve allows the water flow to be changed thanks to a knob that rotates some internal flaps. If this knob is accidentally not positioned well and is located between two nearby positions, there is a possibility that sand ends up in the pool. To solve the problem, simply position the selector valve lever correctly.

Internal vent tube misplaced or broken

The internal vent tube in the filter vents air from the filter candles upwards. It can happen that it moves, causing the filter to malfunction and sometimes even to bring sand into the pool. In this case, simply reposition it.

Broken selector valve

If the selector valve is broken, it is no longer possible to change positions; we risk turning it to one position and actually getting another. This could cause sand to leak from the sand filter into the pool. To solve the problem, simply replace the valve with a new one; it is an easily available spare part on the market.

Damaged filter candles or central pipe

If one or more filter candles or the central pipe break, sand could end up in the pool carried by the water flow through a small crack.
To ascertain the breakage of these parts, it is necessary to empty the filter by removing all the sand, and then proceed with replacing the broken parts.

Sand filter too full

If the filter has just been filled with new sand, make sure you haven't overfilled it, as the ideal amount of sand is approximately 3/4 of the total capacity.
