How to clean the pre-filter basket of a swimming pool filtration pump
What is the purpose of the pool filtration pump's pre-filter? What kind of maintenance does it require?
How do you clean it?
Danny, your pool expert, answers.
The pre-filter is located at the front of the pump and is designed to catch larger impurities (such as leaves, hair, pebbles, insects, etc.) that would otherwise end up in the impeller, potentially compromising the pump's operation.
Thanks to its removable basket, maintenance and cleaning are quick and easy.

The pre-filter basket should be cleaned frequently, at least weekly, and before backwashing the filter.
Cleaning the basket is very simple:
- turn off the filtration pump
- close all suction valves from the pool, bottom drains, and return jets, and set the six-way valve to the "closed" position
- remove the transparent pre-filter cover and extract the pre-filter basket
- wash the basket with a strong jet of running water to remove all dirt residue and reposition it
- close the pre-filter cover and reopen all valves
Pay attention to the correct position of the basket: the front opening must be well aligned with the pump's suction port.
