How to lower chlorine
You might notice a very strong chlorine smell in your pool or detect excessive amounts with a tester.
But why is there such a strong chlorine smell? How can you reduce the amount of chlorine in the water?
Danny, your pool expert, has the answers.
Too much chlorine was added to the pool, how to remove it
There is no way to lower the chlorine level in the pool. The only thing you can do is leave the system running and wait a few hours (or days – depending on how much chlorine was added) for it to evaporate. Otherwise, you will need to drain at least 1/3 of the pool and add new water.
Why there is a strong "smell" of chlorine in the pool
Over the years, customers have often asked me how to avoid using chlorine in the pool to prevent the smell. But the reality is that if you smell a strong chlorine odor, you are not using the products and the pool's filtration system optimally. In fact, you don't need to use a lot of chlorine to have clear and decontaminated water.
Here are some tips:
- It is important, as I always emphasize, to use chlorine while keeping the pH level between 7.2 and 7.4, allowing it to work at its best.
- The more the filtration system is run, the less chlorine we need to add to the pool. In spring and autumn, 8 hours of circulation per day are sufficient, but in summer, the system should run for at least 12 hours a day, and 24 hours is even better.
- For water maintenance, I recommend using Tablok Super multifunction tablets which, thanks to their slow dissolution, gradually release chlorine into the pool, helping the pH remain stable.
- Regularly using an electric robotic cleaner helps oxygenate the water, also assisting the filtration system; a clean pool requires less chlorine.
In conclusion, by following these tips, you will have a properly maintained pool with a chlorine level similar to that found in domestic tap water.
